 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Pond of Safety Road was driveable in my all wheel drive car right to the pond lot. Water bars the last couple of tenths of a mile to the high of land would scare many drivers. |

Drove all the way to the Pond, slowly. We decided to whack to Pond Hill since Becca had not visited it before and we like having a Hike and Pond combo. Hot and humid this morning. We too the woods road up hill to about 2300' and then walked kind of flat up and down going toward the peak. Good to get high above the pond to avoid wet areas, that was the theory and it worked. (If you get to the Northwest end of the pond you will be rewarded with a big view of Madison and Adams and you can see Madison hut too--more on this later.) Woods are open with a bit of hobble bush here and there but it wasn't thick so it was easy to walk through. We crossed a couple old log roads, one nearer the summit is quite clear. Summit is big and flat and the recognized highpoint is nearer the west end. We reversed compass needle and followed nearly the same way back. We brought our packrafts and went paddling on the Pond of Safety and golly the views from the north, northwest end are big and wide. From Crescents, Randolph Mt. to Mt. Madison and Mt. Adams and we could see the hut! Then SPLASH!! just a 100 feet from us an immature eagle snagged a fish out of the water. Startled me so that I alsmost jumped out of my boat. Fun adventure to a quiet corner of the Whites. |
