Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: the one crossing was very minor and easy
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: trails in great shape. yellow blazes on the ledge sections were helpful before sunrise. only a few easy stepover blowdowns all day, mostly on Nickerson Ledge Trail
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Steve Smith's guidebook description of Carter Ledge Trail is very accurate and persuaded me to leave Fin at home. She could have done this trail but it would have been excessively difficult and dangerous for her, with many spots requiring assistance. The one particularly sketchy scramble with the downward slope would likely prove fatal with a slip, so unless your dog is a ridiculous mountain goat who is extremely comfortable with lots of very tall exposed scrambles I strongly recommend keeping them off Carter Ledge Trail.
Bugs
Bugs: none

Comments
Comments: Finished redlining the Chocorua/Eastern Sandwich section today with a clockwise loop plus an out-and-back on Nickerson ledge. Carter Ledge Trail has tons of very steep, rough scrambling that was extremely enjoyable, but as mentioned above it is not appropriate for the vast majority of dogs. The wind was howling this morning on the ledge sections and Middle Sister Summit. Chocorua went in/out of clouds 5 times in the 5 minutes I spent up there, while every other surrounding peak had zero cloud cover. It was pretty neat to witness. On the way down Middle Sister Trail I witnessed the most magnificent sunrise I have ever seen-it was a real treat to sit and watch it rise above the horizon for several minutes. I look forward to hiking Carter Ledge again someday with natural light-it seemed as if the views going up were really nice but it was pitch dark until I was near the top. zero hikers seen this morning-the early bird gets the worm!
