Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, September 25, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of roadside parking on Route 25A for Mt. Cube Trail - only 4 other cars. The small parking area for Kodak Trail and J Trail at the end of Quinttown Road was busier, but there was still room to park there. Quinttown Road is mostly in very good condition - the part past the junction with Mousley Brook Road isn't as manicured but is still in fine condition.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings of both North Branch Jacobs Brook on Kodak Trail and Brackett Brook on Mt. Cube Trail were rock hops - the rocks were wet, but be careful and you'll make it across. Plenty of smaller crossings that were all relatively easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of wetness and erosion on all trails.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several. Please keep your dogs on a leash as much as possible, particularly at a summit - other hikers may not want your dogs to approach them and might react negatively if you allow them to approach anyway, especially if you are nowhere to be seen when they approach. We had to shout at a few other hikers to keep their dogs away when they tried to approach us with the owners nowhere to be seen.
Bugs
Bugs: None that I can remember.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: This was a very fun hike! We did a traverse over Mt. Cube, going up Kodak Trail and down Mt. Cube Trail (both of which are part of the AT). Kodak Trail is quite scenic, with some nice viewpoints and lots of rock (though it doesn't involve any serious rock scrambling). The foliage is just starting to come out, particularly on the north-facing slopes. Hexacuba Shelter was nice to visit.

Lots of wetness and erosion on all trails. Kodak Trail went back and forth between dry and wet/muddy/slippery/eroded. The upper part of Mt. Cube Trail was almost entirely wet, eroded, and slippery, with lots of slippery ledges, mud, and standing and running water. The lower part was somewhat better but still had a few mudpits. Even the North Cube Side Trail had its share of mudpits. All signs were in place, however the location of the start of Mt. Cube Trail from Route 25A is not entirely obvious.

Views from both the summit and North Cube were excellent. The descent on Mt. Cube Trail started off quite rough, wet, and muddy, and remained so for quite some time. It got somewhat better as we descended. Trails were generally moderate and practically never steep. Very enjoyable day and excellent weather.
