We hiked the Highwater Trail from the Moriah Brook Trail to the ME/NH state line. The first section, up to the Shelburne trail, required a careful eye to keep track of the trail. There were 2 short sections where we could not find any trace of a trail. Just before the Shelburne Trail we decided to go a little to the left at a confusing stream crossing. We hit the Shelburne trail just a little above the Highwater intersection. We then did on out and back on the Shelburne Trail up to the Kenduskeag intersection. The Shelburne Trail from the Highwater Trail to the river is marked by a combination of pink flagging, yellow blazes, arrows and cairns. There are 2 small flood channels that were rock hops. The Highwater Trail past the Shelburne Trail is good for 5 or 10 minutes then follows yellow flagging to a flood channel. There is a log across the channel or needed to be waded. After that yellow flagging leads to the original trail on the far side of the island along the main channel of the river. The yellow flagging is hard at times to make out with yellow leaves. At the end of the island, go right onto the sand, proceed to the end and look left. The trail will be visible across the flood channel, which needed to be waded. The Highwater Trail continues with 2 more sections of yellow flagging when the trail disappears into the river. Overall the trail was easier than we feared. The flagging helps a great deal. We did not see anyone all day. |
