 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Ample parking in front of the abandoned house where the trail begins. It's between Valley Road and the Castle trailhead on Route 2, and it's recognizable because it has a 3-car garage facing Route 2 and the garage doors are all painted red. Trail starts at a sign to the right of the house. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
None. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
No major obstructions. A few large puddles on the logging road bits. Signs were in place at the intersections with logging roads, but they're kind of small so watch out for them carefully. The second (steeper) logging road is very overgrown and has no clear footway. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
I don't see why not. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Very few. However, the logging road sections, particularly the overgrown one, are probably tick heaven in the late spring and summer. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Nothing. |

 | Comments: |
Quick jaunt out to the Crystal Mine and back. Trail starts off fairly smooth but soon gets rougher. Runs near some sets of black and blue tubes for significant distances - maybe a maple sugaring operation? Junctions with logging roads were mainly clear but the signs were small, and blazes were usually there but not always. Trail was mostly easy to follow - the only part that made me look around was just below the left turn onto the major logging road - the trail zigs right and zags left, and that area is not well blazed and the footway is indistinct. The second (steeper) logging road is very overgrown and has no clear footway, and thus if it is wet or raining (as it was today), your lower legs will get wet. Grades were occasionally moderate but mostly easy. The mine site was quite interesting - we found the three shaft openings, and there were pieces of quartz scattered all around. Definitely something you don't normally see on a White Mountains hike. |
