The newly-built stretch Iron Mtn. Trail, which replaces the former steep and severely eroded north section, is in beautiful shape (see comments below). A fine job by USFS and White Mtn. Trail Collective on this trail! The rest of Iron Mtn. Trail is also good, although still not blazed. Lots of small cairns though. No blowdowns. The bootleg signs are no longer accurate with the new trail in place. |

Wow, USFS and White Mtn. Trail Collective have done an amazing job creating a brand new 1.0 mi. long section of Iron Mtn. Trail. This replaces the former direct approach which was steep and very heavily eroded. The new section swings way out to the west very gradually via many long and short switchbacks then comes back to rejoin the original route 0.2 mi. below the summit. Nice new cribbing, stone steps, and wooden steps are in place. Right at the start of the trail is a long wooden staircase up to the first field. The hike is now longer but not significantly so. From trailhead to summit: 1.3 mi.; from trailhead to the south cliffs: 2.1 mi.
No rain today but plenty of clouds to limit the views. Still some nice foliage color around, but becoming muted. Iron Mtn. Rd. was very colorful. Quite a number of folks out on the trail today so the new section is getting plenty of use. The description and AMC map will be updated for the next WMG which comes out next year. |
