Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bridge over a tiny stream, another tiny stream near the cabin.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Excellent signage, especially the info about the homesteads! A few blowdowns, none difficult. Excellent blazing, diamonds affixed to trees rather than painted. Thank you!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Nothing but friendly, well-trained, well-behaved dogs today! Make sure you have enough water for them.
Bugs
Bugs: I was going to say "none," but guess what little @#$% I just saw latched onto my arm! Check yourselves, your kids, and your dogs!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One trekking pole tip cover - blue - on the Red Hill Trail. I believe it's in my other pocket. Unless I lost it, I can mail it to you if it's yours. Light grey zip off part of someone's pants. Saw it at the kiosk, left it there.

Comments: Red hill, Cook and Horne Homesteads

Had a commitment earlier, so this was a midafternoon hike. Actually a good time for this popular place. Many cars were there, but most of those folks were descending when we started. This was our first time on the rerouted Red hill Trail and first time on Cabin Trail (I don't think there was a Cabin Trail when we first hiked Red Hill (early 2000s). We did this clockwise, which I would recommend. That way, by the time you get to the "historic section," your day is nearly over (mileage wise) and you can take your time looking around. Both trails are pleasant and easy to follow, even when footbed is obscured by leaves. And speaking of leaves, there is still a lot of color in this area. Late afternoon sun on the mass of yellow leaves was stunning. HUGE owl off trail right before coming out of the woods onto the summit.

Good day for views, and thanks to the LRCT for their guide to the surrounding peaks (located up on the fire tower).

Descent on Cabin Trail was delightful. Descending, you come to the hunter's cabin first. While it is not locked, there is a sign warning of danger and telling you to keep out. While you can partially see into some of the windows, resist the temptation to do more. A little beyond here you will come to the Cook Homestead. There are several cellar holes and an artifact or two. The yellow blazed spur path will take you to a few sites. Don't miss it!
