Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond Road is a bit rough in the first mile where ATVs are allowed. The road improves once past the first mile. I parked on Success Pond Road at trailhead. AllTrails told me to turn right down Ball Cap Road which is a right turn before getting to Trailhead. Fortunately I had read to park on Success Pond Road so I drove further down past Ball Cap and found the trail on the right.

Water Crossing Notes: A couple easy brook crossings
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A lot of broken or submerged boardwalks. Also many boardwalks had raised bolts. More boardwalks are needed to bridge some of the very muddy sections if development of side paths around the mud is to be avoided.

Comments
Comments: Beginning of Success Trail is a steady climb on a wide logging road with good footing although trail is now covered in leaves so some minor mud was hidden. Higher up there is more mud and standing and running water in places. The trail to The Outlook was also muddy and well worth the trip as the views are amazing out to the cliffs of North Bald Cap, the snow-covered Presidentials, and many more peaks. The mud continued intermittently on Mahoosuc and there is a somewhat tricky chimney that required tossing the poles and using my hands to get down. The summit with the USGS high point marker has a trail sign for Mahoosuc Trail. Continuing south on Mahoosuc through a very deep patch of mud and over some broken boardwalks through a boggy meadow brings you to more summit ledges. The herd path to the crash site is about 0.25-0.3 miles from the USGS high point. Look for a large boulder with a cairn on top on the left. The herd path is overgrown, muddy, and marked intermittently with pink ribbons. It was much tougher to follow coming back than going down to the crash site because there are many side paths to confuse you. I ended up bushwacking my way back up to the Mahoosuc Trail after respectfully viewing the site. In summary, gorgeous views, especially from The Outlook, lots of water and mud so wear your high gaiters or hip waders, and a plane crash site should you choose to make your way through the woods and mud to get there and back.
