What better day to hit this loop than a rainy day? Always wet, and lots of beaver activity - don't wear your favorite shoes.
From the beginning of the Hubbard Brook Trail, you need to pay attention. There has been a bit of undefined rerouting due to heavy beaver activity (flooding) that takes you a little to the right (west) of the trail. Some crossings of mini canals that make your hamsters run, including one about 3/4 of a mile in where you could easily lose a shoe if you don't choose your steps wisely - don't wear your favorite shoes. Markings aren't too scarce, but don't rely on them for this trail. We took bearings early on (what are those?!), and occasionally checked GPS as a secondary source to keep us on track. Reaching the forest road after that was a welcome relief. I think it's safe to say after reaching the forest road that navigation became more straight forward, and we rarely asked if we were on trail.
Three Ponds trail wasn't too bad, we found the wettest section to be by Foxglove Pond. Again, don't wear your favorite shoes. The spur trail out to the smaller pond was beautiful, and prior to the junction with Donkey we took a break and admired the larger pond in all its mist and glory. Reaching the official junction for Three Ponds and Donkey, we opted to take the bypass (north, northeast) as the outlet was too high to fathom crossing to the obvious junction sign and bog bridge on the other side. Donkey Hill was fine, only one of us fell in the mud. In fairness it was only after laughing at the other for dunking a foot in the water trying to figure out if we could have used the original crossing. Reaching Kineo Trail was a welcome point in the trip with nothing of interest to note other than knowing it was the final climb before reaching beerdom. |
