My first Presidential Traverse attempt! Started at Appalachia at 4:45 AM, heading up Valley Way. It was cloudy as the sun came up, but it rose somewhere on the way up Osgood to Mt. Madison. We were in and out of the clouds for most of the morning - summitting Madison, Adams, and Jefferson was tough but fun. Spikes were used on the final ascent of Washington after Clay and stayed on more or less until Eisenhower.
Sun fully disappeared around noon, and shortly after ascending Washington in mid afternoon it started to snow. Snow was not in the original forecast so it was unexpected, but we were prepared nonetheless. It was coming down hard and fast, so we decided to bypass the southern peaks and just take Crawford Path directly back to Crawford Notch where we were parked. Ended up finishing at 8:15 PM. Despite being a new record for longest single day hike (19.4 miles), this was my first time ever hiking in the Whites without seeing a single other person not in my party. I guess everyone else got the memo about the weather besides us! Despite the difficulties, had a blast and hope to come back soon for a full traverse. |
