The ice flow section mentioned in a previous report on the Falling Waters Trail just before the summit of Little Haystack is still there, I put microspikes on at that point, but took them off again coming down the other side of Little Haystack. About 1" of packed down snow on top of rock and ice across the ridge, the icier sections being on the northern side of Lincoln, and I donned the spikes again. Some people had spikes on, some didn't; I liked having the extra bite into the snow-covered ice sections. Descending Lafayette, it was helpful to have spikes on again, though other people were ascending that section in bare boots. There was another icy section before the hut that had ice flows and black ice-covered rocks. Warm temps and no wind across the ridge made for an excellent day. |
