Comments
Comments: Very easy start leading to a very steady climb! We liked the variety of trail surfaces - smooth old road, rock tumbles, ledges as we approached the South Moat summit. It was wet and icy on the ledges but easy to find dry patches for the most part. Some running water on the ledges, both under the ice and on top. Beautiful views from South Moat, and not so windy so it was quite pleasant with the sun shining. Decided to proceed to Middle, encountering some snow in the col between the peaks but nothing that posed any danger. Just a bit cooler in that area. Went past the summit of Middle Moat and realized we needed to go off the main trail to tag the summit, so we found the herd paths leading over there pretty easily. Our descent was fine, a lot of the ice had melted and ledges were much drier, so it was less challenging than we had anticipated. However, we think it is a much easier hike in the winter! Overall a lovely hike on a beautiful day for this time of year!
