| Comments: |
Beautiful early winter day for hiking. Started hike at ~7 am with a temp ~23F, a light wind of ~4 mph, and a wind chill of ~17F. Encountered a fair amount of black ice on rocks and trail itself but managed to bare boot it to the junction of the Avalon and A-Z trails (~1.3 miles) when the microspikes were put on. Definitely needed them for the rest of the ascent and descent. Met no one on the ascent to the Mt. Tom summit and thoroughly enjoyed the solitude and beauty of the surroundings. The A-Z trail is not well marked but I followed a couple of boot prints in recently fallen snow and periodically checked my GPS app to verify I was still on the trail. On the descent, I met over two dozen hikers ascending the Avalon and A-Z trails. |
