Comments
Comments: Great trip up to Passaconaway this morning. The mud is frozen, and the leaves are dry, so the footing was fast up Dicey’s. I didn’t use microspikes until just after the junction with Rollins. All of that water that typically flows on the trail, at this point, was frozen. Microspikes made that section no problem at all. I took East Loop to Walden, because I like the views from the ledges going up Walden, but realized that I didn’t want to come back down that way because it was really icy! I don’t know why, but that section, near the Passaconaway summit, didn’t seem so daunting last winter!!
I didn’t spend much time at the summit (we all need our bonding time with those little cairns, LOL) because even with the protection of the trees, that wind was pretty chilly!! Once I lost some elevation heading down Dicey’s on the other side of the summit, the mountain protected me from the wind and it was an easy trip. I would definitely recommend just taking Dicey’s out and back, or doing the loop counterclockwise, like I ended up doing, as going down Walden looks kind of sketchy, currently.
I saw only 2 hikers - they said rhey had stayed at Camp Rich last night!! Wowza, that was brave in this weather!! They appeared no worse for wear!!
