Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Although Kelly Rd is posted as private, you should be fine to drive a couple hundred feet down it to park at the start of FR64B which, by definition, is public. I was able to pull my car off the road enough so as not to block the gate to FR64B or Kelly Rd. There were signs on South Pond Rd saying that there was roadwork ahead and there was a truck or two but no obstructions. Road in was fine.

Comments: FR64B is very overgrown

Another very late trail report. Day 23, Peak 25. 2nd hike of the day after whacking to Mill Mtn. The snow squalls actually stopped following me for a bit and it was sunny as I got ready to hike in my car. Upon exiting, it was clouding up again, and around the time of my summit, I hit snow flurries 🙃 I believe temps when I started at 12:45pm were in the high 20s/low 30s but the wind made it feel quite cold especially facing into it on my way down. My face was on and off again covered for most of the ridge walk downhill.

I walked along FR64B very briefly before jumping into the woods as it was so overgrown and not seeming to head in the right direction. I went in the woods and tried heading S/SW to attain the western ridge of the mountain. This was not terribly nice as I was walking through whippy trees. Eventually I hit a road, which I followed briefly due south before turning left into the woods where they slowly for better. You slowly transition out of the not so great woods as you attain the ridge and ascend along it but there was still a good deal of young growth. Once on the ridge, the hike is very straightforward. Follow the ridge E/SE to the summit at mostly moderate grades. Woods aren’t terrible but not pleasant down low, slowly getting better.

I did a little searching for the canister but not hard to find. I signed in and headed back down. I did a better job than I thought I was doing following the ridge down. I kept feeling like I was getting off of it but I stayed on it, generally just north of my line up. That said, in keeping with tradition, I eventually got off course on my way down. As I neared the end of the ridge and began bearing right (NW) off of the ridge toward my car to try and avoid the not so great woods I hit on my ascent, I got pulled off course and did a lot of wondering around. And I still hit unpleasant woods. I got very close to the road I hit on my way up but I hit another one just before (east) of it and took that instead rather than walking the additional 200ft to the road. Well I followed this too long and kept thinking it was turning back toward my car when it wasn’t so I finally just cut left (west) and walked the final 0.1mi to my car.

This would be a pretty nice and easy hike if it weren’t for the beginning :/ too bad we can’t approach from the true start of the ridge on Kelly Rd where things would likely be much nicer. The hike took only slightly less time than my hike of Mill Mtn earlier in the day. This hike was about 3mi with about 850ft of gain which took about 2hrs.
