Comments
Comments: We bare-booted for about a mile then added microspikes/Hillsounds and kept them on until within .5 miles of the return. There was trace snow on the lower mile then increasing powdery snow as we gained elevation. We were lucky that we were the last of the 12 hikers on the trail. Light traction was sufficient because the trail was broken out. We carried snowshoes but never needed them. It's possible that had we been breaking trail, especially within the last .5 mile of Valley Way, snowshoes would have been helpful (although no one else was carrying them). Below tree line was lovely but it was a cold and windy day with poor visibility once we exited Valley Way. All of us opted to just summit Madison and call it a day.
