| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Fewer than ten cars at Lincoln Woods lot when I started, ~ 830am. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Of the two main crossings, the first was relatively straightforward ice-topped rock hop. The second crossing (wider) was running high enough that going straight across, even via an icy/snowy log, seemed a poor path; I scouted down and up the bank and ended up crossing about 50 meters upstream, which was an easier crossing but required some side-hill bushwhacking to get to the appropriate location. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
All good - just a few stepovers on the whacks. |

Cloudy? Snowy? No views? The forecast just begged me to go for a cruise out to Owl's Head. And cruise I did over the long stretches of ice on Lincoln Woods Trail from the recent thaw/freeze. I wore spikes start to finish for this hike, and there were many icy spots especially on LWT, Lincoln Brook Tr, and the steep sections of the Brutus whack. It snowed lightly most of the day, with the sun very briefly peering through the clouds around midday. On my return leg the new snow had accumulated maybe 0.5" - 1.0" but enough to keep my attention retracing my steps back to Black Pond. The ice still lurks beneath the new snow.
Just saw two other hikers all day, and it was coincidentally at the summit. It was nice to run into (again) Don and Jill. Congrats to Jill on 12/12 for Owlie! |
