Ice was the name of the game. Dry ground/some minor ice spots on 19-mile brook trail. About 1/2 way up, I just kept my micro spikes on. Some spots looked like I would just slide right into the brook if I lost my traction.
Spotty ice/some mud on Carter Dome trail. Water crossings easy to walk across, with spikes. More ice up higher on the Dome trail up to Zeta Pass.
Out of Zeta Pass, first section of the trail had major ice, then spotty ice, then after the junction w/the Carter Moriah trail (to Mt Hight) there was crusty snow! YAY!
Heading N on C-M trail from Zeta Pass, mixed bag, but once over S Carter, surprisingly less ice, and easy to maneuver around/over.
N Carter trail was a river of ice, but thankfully, it's narrow enough that one can slither down with SOME control, by using poles strategically along the way.
S Imp trail ran out of ice about 1/2 way down, where I was able to take the spikes off. Well, there were just a few more short sections of ice, but I could get by with more strategic pole placement. |
