Solo hike. Beginning on Gilman Valley Road 0.6 from NH25, I hiked a clockwise loop around the peaks of Nickerson Mountain, capturing the northwest summit, the north summit (comm tower, old ski area), the main summit (Grant Peak), and the east summit, thence back to Gilman Valley Road and out to my car. There's a dilapidated cabin and unique outhouse on the NW summit. On the N summit are the almost-collapsed remains of the Whittier ski area lift wheelhouse along with a communications tower enclosure. I used old woods roads and logging roads in places (most visible in OSM as trails or roads) with bushwhacking to connect the dots. Some of the woods road/logging road routes were very eroded. There are no trails over the main summit (Grant Peak) or the east summit. Both the NW and E summits have nice view ledges, and there is a view from the top of the old lift line on the N summit (but not for me that day--all socked in). About 8-12 inches of mashed potato snow on top of a breakable crust of snow. Some wash-outs on logging roads. No other tracks visible. |
