I walked a couple miles of roads and then bushwhacked to West Castle. I worked my way down to the col and then slabbed over the west side of Castle, knowing that ridge is covered in blowdown. I slabbed along the ridge, soon committing to climbing up, knowing that I'd passed the worst of it. From the east end of the ridge I bushwhacked to Sugarloaf. For the return, I cut off the reclimb of West Castle and headed straight for the roads.
Snow was very shallow on slopes, but surprisingly deep higher up and along ridges. Depths ranged from a few inches to a few feet. In places, breaking took a fair amount of effort. |
