 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Drove up Cox Farm Rd. to a point 1 mile beyond its jct with Horner Brook Rd. This mile is plowed but not sanded or salted, with one moderately steep pitch. We drove up in a 4WD with snow tires. Parked beyond the end of maintained road in the yard of the brown house - having gotten the OK from the owner who suggested that we park in his yard rather than on the road. |

 | Comments: |
From vehicle, we walked to the driveway of the blue house on the hill. Then up driveway approx 100' to a green gate - the start of the abandoned snomo trail. Followed snomo trail to SW side of pond. Easy bw to recognized summit of Russsell Pond Peak. Followed tracks back. Continued E on snomo trail for a few minutes until it turned S. Turned left off snomo trail and followed unblazed hiking trail along edge of pond to the campground. Hiked through CG roads to 1800' where we started bw to col. From col, easy bw to recognized summit of East Peak. Followed tracks back to col. Headed W to steeps of Russell. Followed base of steeps SW until we found a moderate pitch going SW to the summit area. Once on top we turned SW to recognized summit. From summit we hiked W a short while to bypass the cliffs on the S side of the summit. Then turned SW skirting ledgy or steep areas. We hit the snomo trail near the green gate.
Breaking conditions - varied: 1) 0" breaking on a crunchy surface on the snomo trail and in the CG. 2) 0" breaking on an annoyingly unsupportive crust on the bw to Russell Pond Peak and the pitch from the CG to the col. 3) 0"-8" snow on a supportive base to East peak. 4) 0"-4" snow cover on a supportive base on Russell Mountain.
Grades - mostly easy. Moderate on pitch between CG and col. Short, moderate pitch up Russell and also some moderate pitches on the downhill down Russell
Woods- wide open hardwoods except for some tighter softwoods on East peak. |
