 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
BK, channeling his inner Duke boy, got a running start and sailed us airborn right over the gate, if the General Lee was Subaru. We rejoiced at our success. Unless you seriously upset someone enough to go get heavy equipment, like a bobcat or a front end loader, the gate is going to be open until Spring. The trailhead was more or less full. We opted to park at Unknown Pond and walk the little bit. This lot was also full. |

|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The left arrow turn sign on the fire road up the hill for Bunnel Notch is gone. The "Mt Cabot 4120" sign is gone. How do you leave the "NO POOPING" sign but take these? The old Mt. Cabot Trail sign has moved to a new location, about a half a mile from the old trailbed, randomly bolted to a tree in the woods about 50' in. I have no idea how I saw it. Took one tree out |

Mt. Cabot, Mt. Cabot (Southeast Knob), Patenaude's Perch
A FINE day in the forest was had. Relax. Take it cheesy people. I will try and refrain from my dad cheese puns. Dont cheddar tear, it will be ok. This one was full round #9 finish for me! We started at about 11am due to the wild sub zero readings. Remington34 has done a grate job at detailing trail conditions. I will echo their sentiment that there was about 30-40 people out. About 5 had shoes. This also includes large AMC group, prominently displaying their AMC badges for all to see, leading about 10 people. Not one of them had snowshoes. Great to see the AMC being such great stewards of the backcountry. I mean its January on the Kilkenny Range - anyways. We hit the true summit and backtracked to the Cabin. We layered up and I took a compass bearing to Patenaude's Perch, or so I shall dub it, as she was the one who introduced it to me. In true nordic_gal fashion, I laid down a serpentine track. Why walk over something when you can walk around it. She might shed a tear reading this for that fact alone. We enjoyed stunning views of the entire Mahoosuc Range, the entire Pemi, most of the Presidential and C-M Range, the Osceolas, as well as some VT Peaks. Yes, there are views from Cabot if you know where to look. Conditions from the cabin to the car greatly improved from Remington34's passing. It is still unconsolidated but it is a lovely snowshoe track. We played groomers on the way out. Spikes are useless at this time until we get a proper freeze thaw, this trail will maintain its unconsolidated state. You WILL need snowshoes unless you want to rototill.
It was unbrielievable to run into Remington34. We where talking about them earlier in the day and there they where! Their child ran past us so fast, I thought it might have been a ghost(pepper). I camembert the last time we saw eachother, but its always gouda to run into familiar friends! I hope you had a mozerhella good day, and we did find the views :) |
