Made it to summit and down of this NH500 highest on Nordic skis (Fischer 78 and 88 both with easy skins). 4-5 inches of soft powder on top of firm base made for incredible ski conditions. butternut road is a forest/skidder road that ascends to half mile pond just west of the summit. Once we reached the HOL near the pond we started bushwhacking due east and found mostly open woods staying to the north side of the western ridge. Last 100’ was well-earned! Recognized high point is a glass jar on small distinct knob. we signed in and had a really awesome/fast descent following our tracks down the hill. You ever get a mile into a tough trip and your hiking/ski partner tells you they forgot their phone, water, and food and they consumed nothing all morning and they feel cold and unwell and are unable to put their own skins on? that’s when a good partner shares your water and food and then doubles down on the pace just to punish them for their stupidity. |
