 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The Berlin Fish Hatchery (603-449-3412) told us that the hatchery gate on York Pond Rd. would be open through the night despite the sign saying it closes at 4pm, and indeed it stayed open (in fact, we didn't even see where the gate was!) When we arrived at around 9:45am, there were not enough open spaces in the York Pond Trailhead lot, so we parked at the Unknown Pond Trailhead lot on the side road on the right 0.1 mi before the York Pond Trailhead lot. Both lots were plowed. |

 | Comments: |
There was a nice packed snow snowshoe track all the way up to the summit, perfect for snowshoeing. Just off the trail, the snow depth was about 30 inches. Our group of nine snowshoers encountered about five other small groups, many using snowshoes, although a few were using microspikes and putting some holes into the trail. Between the cabin and the summit one needed a little care to avoid small tree roots poking through the snow along the trail in 3 or 4 places - not a problem if paying attention. There were no tracks on Kilkenny Ridge Trail going beyond the summit towards The Bulge, The Horn, and Unknown Pond. It is well worth taking the short spur on the right labelled "VIEW" partway up Kilkenny Ridge Trail (elev. 3350 ft.) on the way to the summit and the short spur on the left immediately before the summit. |
