One set of ski tracks going up Old Mast Road since the last storm. 4-6 inches of heavy snow down low. 1/2 mile in while layering down we were passed by Postholio. We were mostly able to clean up after him. At 4 way junction he headed up Walden. Guessing SLT had seen no traffic since before last two storms. Snow much deeper here. Heavy, dense and sticky. Broke out until junction with Square Ledge Branch Trail. Original plan was SLT to Walden to Wonalancet Range Trail but we noticed WRT was not broken and suspected we would be be breaking the wet cement all the way around. Also did not not want to get up to SL and then have to come back down the ledge so we doubled back from SLBT junction. We left a pretty nice track (about 12 deep trough) on our out and back on SL. Still soft but cement will harden tonight. Postholio had come back down Walden and ground up the OMR track but we cleaned up after him again until we met his two brothers heading up near the Wilderness boundary. I never used to but lately I feel compelled to encourage trail etiquette. I asked them to help me understand their aversion to shoes in such soft conditions. Said they thought the trails would be packed and firm. In a nice way I suggested they consider those who follow, who may be injured in the holes they made. They were receptive, so maybe they'll give it more thought next time. |
