Beautiful but HARD hike for winter. Day was partly sunny and in the low 40s, so the snow was soft and wet. Trail was consolidated enough that microspikes were fine to the summit of South Moat, but there were no recent tracks north of there (looked like it had been at least a week or more). I blazed the path to North Moat with my snowshoes, which were a must because the snow was soft and deep. The beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges made it worth it, though. Overall, this 10.8 mi hike is very difficult but the views and sense of achievement pay off. |
