Temperatures made it into the 50s today, but as of this evening, there's been very little rain.
Snow has softened up and there has been some melting, but not even to produce any monorail conditions. Nevertheless, a lot of the bootpacked trail (up to the first viewpoint) is transitioning to a water ice, which will likely be blue ice by the time temperatures drop again. Much softer from the first viewpoint to the summit (less traffic) and anywhere else not heavily packed. Not too much postholing (a few fresh ones up high), but I was able to fix a few courtesy snowshoes and soft snow.
I wore snowshoes roundtrip due to the soft snow. They also gripped the soft blue ice nicely, as snowshoe crampons have a broader span and a deeper dig than Microspikes. For the bootpacked portion of this trail, Microspikes will be adequate in the medium term future when temperatures are below freezing, but dull rock-spikes may be inadequate. |
