Room for about 7 or 8 cars in the small lot by the power lines. That lot was plowed and a bit muddy by the afternoon. 2 cars were parked at the end of Bangor Street near the trailhead sign. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There are a number of blowdowns across the trail at various points. We removed one, but there are probably a handful more. Some you can walk under and others you could step over. There’s one with a lot of branches where a herd path is forming around it. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a few pups out today enjoying the day |
|
 | Bugs: |
Some snow fleas in the afternoon down around 2000ft |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Found half of a black hiking pole - brought it down and left it at the trailhead sign |

 | Comments: |
Started out in spikes and made it until about a half mile from Mount Surprise, where we switched to snowshoes due to snow balling on the bottom of our spikes. Snowshoes stayed on for the remainder of the hike.
The start of the Carter Moriah Trail is all ice going up right from the trailhead for that initial short ascent. There were a number of sections before and after Mount Surprise that warranted good traction on steep areas with large amounts of both exposed ice and ice hidden under a light layer of snow - MSR snowshoes did the trick for us, but everyone else was in spikes.
There was a big difference in the snow conditions by the afternoon. Lots of wet and sticky snow for most of the descent.
The trail could use some love from more people in snowshoes - with the warm weather this afternoon, it was getting choppy from all the traffic. The summit area of Moriah was down to bare rock. |
