Kind of a weird day. Was expecting a decent amount of snow on trail but that was not the case on Nineteen Mile Brook Tr. Minimal snow and microspikes would work fine on the first 1.9 miles of Nineteen Mile. A group of campers (boy scouts??) had left Carter Hut, so 10 people wearing snowshoes went from Carter Hut to NH16. We headed up Carter Dome Tr and there wasn't much new snow on the trail. The new snow amount was about ankle deep. We did trip on a couple of old post holes along the trail. Along the Carter Moriah Tr, snowshoes were more needed. Heading up to South Carter, there wasn't to much new snow. Still about ankle deep. We even found a bare ice spot just below the summit. From South Carter to Middle Carter, there was more snow thanks to drifting and we were happy to have snowshoes on. The 15 foot rock had a thin layer of snow on top of some ice, making the decent tricky. We reached Middle Carter, then headed back out the way we came.
Notes and Observations on trails.
19 Mile Brook is broken out from NH16 to Carter Hut
Carter Dome Tr is broken out.
Zeta Pass to Carter Dome was broken out according to hikers.
Zeta Pass to Middle Carter is broken out.
Middle Carter heading northward along Carter Moriah Tr was slightly broken out. Maybe by 2 people, 1 of which had snowshoes.
Our team of two did not break anything out so we cannot take credit for that.
New snow amounts was ankle deep at low elevations and a little bit higher due to drifting, but never higher then knee height, and they didn't last long. |
