I used a variety of forestry roads to access the Tunnel Brook North Trailhead, as I was unsure if the washed out section of Tunnel Brook Road had been broken out. On this particular day there was no active logging taking place. The northern end of Tunnel Brook Trail had some old snowshoe tracks and a fairly good base; after 0.5 miles I left the trail and bushwhacked up to the old Tunnel Ravine Trail, which I then followed to the site of the old DOC Tunnel Brook Shelter. From the shelter site I bushwhacked through 8-12 inches of powder to the base of the 2011 Tropical Storm Irene slide. I was looking forward to visiting the massive ice bulges that I had found at the base of the slide last winter, but today they were mostly covered in recent snow. A great outing into Tunnel Ravine — about 7 hours / 10 miles total for this trip. |
