Winter parking is a half mile up Nash Stream Road from its junction with Northside Road. The gate was open but is open only to snowmobiles and authorized vehicles. Logging is finished for the winter. We met a game warden at the parking area who confirmed that anyone driving past the gate would get ticketed. |

Nash Stream Road is covered by a thick layer of ice with some granular snow along the edges. We wore spikes here.
Percy Peaks Trail was firm enough for just spikes down low, but we switched to snowshoes nearer the Cohos Trail/Old Summer Club Trail junction as we started to punch through. Some tricky ice near the first ledges, but it is possible to bushwhack parallel to the trail. We mostly stayed on the trail and felt comfortable enough in just spikes, but some may prefer crampons.
South Percy Spur was a little hard to follow in a couple of spots. Amazing view at the top!! Better in winter than summer.
Snowshoes stayed on until we hit bare rock on North Percy, at which point we switched back to spikes as there was some unavoidable ice. We were fine in spikes in current conditions. Again, spectacular 360 degree views from the summit.
We returned via the same route after briefly considering Percy Loop Trail. Happy to finally have hiked this favorite North Country peak in winter. Yay! And congrats to Percy Sochard!!! |
