Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, March 9, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of spaces at plowed 19 MB lot
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Some snow bridges have collapsed. Not so as to cause any significant crossing problems, tho.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All 3 in good shape, thanks. Minor brishing needed in a few spots on Carter Dome Tr. About a dozen blowdowns/obstructions together, none major. Carter Dome Tr. has one with a well developed herd path to a better duck-under spot. Some blowdowns have occurred since the monorail was established. Main improvement would be more blue blazes on Carter Dome Tr. THere is one near Zeta Pass, for AT or day hikers who've strayed off C-M by mistake. Another one not too far down would be helpful, esp. given the scarcity of blazes in general on this trail. 19 MB could use a blaze or two at the relocated section. There were snowshoe postholes off into the woods at one point!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw none, and no pawprints, but there was water available in a few places.
Bugs
Bugs: None yet, in spite of almost spring like conditions in a few spots (eroded monorail)
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A shoe insert in the lot, would probably be hidden by any car parking in front of it.

Comments
Comments: Only met 6 folks, none with snowshoes. Snowshoes were unnecessary, although I wore mine much of the way to take the weight off my poor achin' shoulders. Weatherwise, a better day than forecasted...in spite of high clouds, there were views up high. S. Carter has views along the way, even very near the summit, due to the snowpack. From the actual summit, I could even glimpse a bit of Middle Carter thr the trees. Washington and Madison/Adams were easily visible in other places. There is an especially nice view of bother Carter Dome and Wildcat from C-M not too far S. of the S. Carter summit. The slide on Carter Dome's west flank is nicely highlighted by the snow, and visible from numerous spots.
