14 left to go now for NHH200 in winter!
I went out today to get one last peak before spring arrives. It was hot and sunny and the uneven slushy and sometimes icy snow made for challenging and tiring xc skiing. But sure a lot faster than trying to snowshoe the 6 miles to where I began my bushwhack, I started from same place I did the other time I did this peak. There is an old logging road spur and snowmobiles had run up it so I was able to ski up it. I left my skis behind and snowshoed up through the new growth picking my way around the little hardwoods. I walked right up to 3 deer that acted like they believed I didn't see them, I got so close before they took off. Snow was soft and got deeper as I went higher. I sunk down 9 inches and that snow is only good for making snowmen. I had a few silly deep postholing and it wasn't easy pulling up my snowshoes! About 3/4 of the way up a few spruce but I walked around and never got into anything tight. Signed the register and I think it is safe to say I am the only person to climb Diamond Ridge this winter. Some old moose tracks near the summit. I went back down the way I came and it felt like I was breaking trail all over again. I couldn't get much speed on the long downhill between mile marker 5 and 2 but I welcomed rest, so much easier than climbing it. Snow was now so thin back at the river crossing I walked up the trail for half a mile. I had hoped to this when there was better snow conditions but wanted to get this tough one down this season.
