Roughly 2 to 3 tenths on Franconia Brook Trail past Redrock Brook scrambled up the slope to an old RR bed. Followed that around into Redrock ravine till the apparent end of the bed, approx 3/4 to 1 mile. Using a compass bearing on the peak, bushwhacked through relatively open woods up to the ridge. Followed the open ridge for approx 3/4 mile till hit the fir waves with open woods in between each wave. Hit the peak at 2:15 PM having left Franconia Brook Tr at 9:50AM.
On the descent, dropped off the N side of the ridge slightly thinking (wrongly) to avoid the fir waves on the ridge and encountered even worse conditions. Extraordinarily dense fir with copious amounts of blow downs thrown in for good measure. A most challenging and unpleasant business. One GPS unit lost in the last fir wave before the summit, the second lost in the fir on the descent. We got back to the Franconia Brook Trail approx 100 yards N of where we entered the woods.
Actually, except for the fir waves, it was a decent if not expensive hike, 14 hours start to finish. Accompanied by GlennS and Ken A. This was the final peak on the Trailwrights 72 for each of us. |
