Strong believers in LNT should avoid this area for awhile, there is a mixture of ice and bare ground and you will either be putting spikes off and on all day or chewing up the dirt. Road into park almost bare, trails start mostly bare with more ice as you get higher until the summit area where it is mostly bare rock. Halfway up Winslow Trail are a couple areas of hard ice where you may want real crampons and a belay to stay in official footway, people seem to be using a myriad of herd paths. Barlow Trail easy enough to follow up high as rocks melted off and paint visible, probably more ice than Winslow due to longer distance but less scary - the steep rock areas up high are melted off. |
