Hiked in from Waterville Valley, bright blue sky and cool temperatures at the start, high clouds by the end, just under 8 hours later. Bare-booted for a while up Cascade Path, then micro-spikes. Up Norway Rapids Trail to Livermore, right turn onto Mt Tripyramid Trail. Spikes came on and off and on and off, etc., going South Peak: areas of ledge followed by ice, etc. Crampons from the top of South Peak all the way to North Tripyramid and back. Lots of post holes evident, must have been frustrating and tiring earlier in the week! But no problem today, ice was firm. Had planned to continue on Scaur Ridge Trail, looping around on the Mt Tripyramid Trail, but decided to backtrack from North Tripyramid because the trail was a bit hard to follow from North Tripyramid and I didn't want to end up at the Kancamagus! Wanted to cut over to Cascade Path on the Boulder Path, but no way to cross there! Didn't see anybody all day, just footprints (crampons) from another party had climbed in from Kancamagus to Middle Peak and back. |
