Trail is in good shape for spiking the entire way. Even with the warmer temps softening it up a bit in the afternoon yesterday (4/2), that was all the traction we needed. The ice patches are soft enough to get a good grip with even dull spikes. Short stretches of the lower trail are bare and the monorail presents itself every now and again, but is very thin. Won't last too long. But the higher elevation still has quite a bit of hard packed snow with some crusty, icy patches. Spent the night in the recently updated cabin. SO MUCH NICER! Bunks have been cleaned off and painted along with all the inside walls. (Too bad the stove could not have been reinstated.) No mice visitors yet either! Cold temps outside but the shelter made it bearable inside out of the winds. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. Extra note: The York Pond Trail at the junction from the bottom to Mt. Terrace and beyond has not been tracked out recently, if at all this winter. No sign of any tracks at either end. Snow depth doesn't look very deep but anyone attempting that trail would be wise to use snowshoes. Happy Trails! |
