 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
All trails in great shape. Surprised to see Cap's in such great shape, it usually takes a beating during the winter. A more detailed report will be forwarded to the adopter of Cap's Ridge Trail, he is going to need an axe! |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
There is a corpse of something, we think a deer, about 100 yards up right on Cap's Ridge Trail. There is just a ton of hair - like for about 20 feet, we noted no bones though we did look for a bit. Something met its demise there. Too much snow to tell more. Might be an issue once it melts for doggoes |

 | Bugs: |
I killed three mosquitos. |

A FINE day to be above the forest! What a stunner of a day. There where only two trip reports for Ridge of the Caps in April, both late in the month. I asked Kiwi and he was like heck yeah lets go for it! We found lovely conditions on jewell, and boundary line trail. Supportive, firm snow (on the way in). Boundary Line has seen some traffic in winter. Jefferson Notch Road was in speedway shape for spikes, but its going to be a long, long time until it sees cars. Surpisingly, we had largely supportive snow to the potholes and "The Dink" trail. After it was obvious travel waned considerbly, but was still supportive! Wild! We made timberline in short order. There is minimal snow to about 4800, lots of rime ice. You could make a case going forward to quite honestly bareboot after reaching timber. After that, its still pretty minor snow depth to the summit Monel Rivet of Jefferson. The entire mountainside is covered in beautiful rime ice feathers. The hardest part for us was navigation but thats largely due to said rime. On the way out we flew. Zero wind on the summit. Snow was mash potato from the potholes back to Jewell. We noted fresh moose tracks on the road, fresh turkey tracks, pine marten tracks aided us above 5000 feet to follow the trail, bear scat on the road, multiple forest chickens, and this really cool, atleast to look at, indent in the snow. It was a bunch of tracks, that abruptly stopped, with two obvious claw marks and wing imprints in the snow. An owl or a hawk got breakfast. |
