Comments
Comments: We went up Glencliff/Carriage Rd to summit then down Benton and Tunnel Brook back to the Glencliff trailhead parking. It was a great way to make the hike more interesting. We barebooted at low elevation and used spikes at higher elevation. Glencliff trail was firmly packed and had a moderate amount of ice but certainly was no problem going up. Going down would have had some spots that require caution and sharp spikes might be important but we went down Benton instead and had no ice to worry about. Benton had not been used recently but the day was cold enough and the crusty snow was firm enough that we only had an occasional post hole. There is still plenty of snow in the woods above 3000 feet and on a warmer day snowshoes would have been required. The river crossings were somewhat difficult. The one at the bottom of Benton was best to cross a bit upriver using a fallen tree to get across the first half. Numerous crossings on Tunnel Brook also took some searching for a way across but none of us got wet. A fun day out with Rachel, Ken, and Mike!
