Road is mostly ice free and in great shape. We parked at York Pond. Space for 5 cars or so in the lot and another 5 or so along the road. Lot full at 7:45. We didn’t venture to the Unknown Pond parking, but it’s larger and had a good amount of cars parked there, too. |

Carried snowshoes in case the trail up high softened and became a postholing mess, but that didn’t happen. Forecast led me to believe that we would have rain all day with temps around 40°. However, we set off under sunny skies and temps around freezing. The low-ish temps kept the trail relatively firm. Large parts of the first few miles are bare ground with mostly stable monorail. Once the climb really starts, the trail is pretty much hard packed. As we approached the summit, the snow began. Nothing crazy while we were up there (late morning). Descending, the temps rose, snow became rain, and the trail became considerably softer. Postholing is a non-issue down low as there just isn’t enough snow depth. We had considered doing the loop, but saw nobody come from that direction (despite the cars at Unknown Pond Trailhead) and the trail didn’t look like anyone had been down there recently. Decided to beat the bulk of the rain back to the car. |
