Sloppy conditions today. You can bareboot from the Kanc to about 1/4 below the wilderness boundary on the Pine Bend Brook Trail. There is bare ground and intermittent monorail, but you can walk on it or alongside it. From there I wore trail crampons all the way to Middle Tripyramid. The trails are very slushy, but I got there before the sun warmed things up so I had decent purchase with just spikes. It had snowed overnight and the sun was melting the snow in the trees, so I had to wear a rain jacket for much of the hike to stay dry. From the middle peak down, I switched to full CAMP crampons. These have long enough spikes to penetrate through the upper slush layer into the more stable ice/snow layer below. |
