Trails

Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, April 21, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at Seven Dwarfs. Happy to pay the parking fee, and appreciate the openness of the owners to accommodate hikers in their lot. Also appreciate the generosity of the landowner who allows hikers to cross the bridge and the land between the Little River Road and the Haystack Road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I bypassed the first two crossings on the North Twin Trail by using the herd path. I used lightweight waders to make the third crossing. Today it was not too deep and not too fast. I did not hunt for a rockhoppable crossing there. YMMV.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several blowdowns, including on the segment of trail between the second and the third crossing, and just beyond the third crossing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None seen today (except on the Little River Road).
Bugs
Bugs: A couple seen, neither vexing nor noisome.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: NA

Comments
Comments: There was recent snow on the lower part of the North Twin Trail, perhaps starting a mile or so in, but it was melting in the relative warmth of afternoon. There is more consistent cover after the third crossing, but you have to go up quite a ways to find much depth. Ascending I found the crust under the new snow to be supportive and edgeable, until at about 4300 feet I was sinking in more than was comfortable, so I donned snowshoes there. I wore them to the summit and back down to about 3200 feet, where the trail starts getting a bit bony. No need for spikes today. (There were tracks on the North Twin Spur, and there were two hikers I met on the trail who were heading that way, also.)
