Temps and wind made it winter conditions up there this morning. Valley way is well packed, microspikes went on a little before the hut and stayed on for most of the day. Good snow conditions to Madison and Adams. From Adams to Edmands col the crust was mostly good enough to stay on top with spikes and ended up being a really nice section. The usual snowfield on Jefferson was pretty sketchy - the section below the usual snowfield is filled in enough to create another steeper angle pitch. With 2-3 inches of heavy powder on top of a solid crust it was difficult to get traction. I switched to MSR snowshoes but it was still difficult to really get grip on the crust underneath. Without an ice axe I didn't feel good about the crossing so I ended up going straight up the lower field and crossing above. I actually never bothered to get back on the actual trail to Jefferson because the snowfields were solid and wide open which made for a nice wander up to the top. Switched back to micros for the descent. The steeper sections below the castles had some breakable crust which made it fairly nice to descend.
Nice quiet day out. With an early start I passed two on the way up Valley Way, saw one person at the top of Adams, and only two more people on the way down Jefferson. I could get used to that... |
