Comments
Comments: Zealand Road and the beginning of Zealand Trail are completely clear of ice/snow. We barebooted in 4.75 miles before the spikes went on to deal with ice patches. A little after the hut we donned snowshoes because the warm conditions were making the snow too slippery for my liking. I just find it easier not to slip back half a step every step. Saw 11 other hikers today all either barebooting or spiking in the snow…I’m exhausted just thinking of it. That said, the base is remarkably firm and postholing was a non-issue for the most part. There was snow on top of the base from earlier in the week that had tons of churn. Should not be a problem unless everything freezes solid. Snow shoes from after Zealand hut until in the col between Bond and Bondcliff, then bareboots over Bondcliff until the step. We descended with spikes, which was slippery but also sort of fun, before going bareboot for the last 5-6 miles.
