Comments
Comments: Moxed spring conditions on Hancock Notch and Cedar Brook trails. We were able to bare boot to junction with Loop trail. All stream crossings were fairly straight forward to cross. Some ice build up on several rocks today. Put on spikes to ascend Loop trail. We went clockwise and switched to hillhound Pros and full crampons after stream crossing, for the final .5 mile assent up to North peak. Snow shoes probably would not have worked well with only 2 inches of fresh snow, ascending this side. There was several inches of fresh snow on top of blue ice. microspikes provided insufficient traction. The ridge from North was well packed and solid. We encountered some drifting snow on the ridge exposed to direct westerly winds. I used snowshoes for the last .2 miles up to south Hancock. The shoes broke thru the drifts easier but not much difference in traction. Switched back to the Pros for the descent down South Hancock. First third of descent was drifts on top of blue ice. I would highly recommend using crampons due to the depth of snow near the summit. the trail Pros were at the Max capability with the snow at the top of boot after being compressed. Used the Pros back to the waterfall then switched back to spike for the walk out. About a mile from trailhead snow disappeared. You can leave the snow shoes in the car. Bring spikes and crampons over the next couple of days. Recommend going counter clockwise.
