Comments
Comments: I would guess that 95% of the trail surface from Passaconaway Road to North Moat summit is free of ice and snow. Even in stretches with frozen compacted snow & slush it was not difficult to get by with bare boots. Nevertheless, it may be wise to carry light traction since it doesn't weigh much (just in case). I would estimate the snow/slush will disappear in a week if we get warm weather. Reports from hikers that ascended North Moat from the north was that there is a lot of ice with one particularly difficult section that requires traction for safe passage. No snow from Passaconaway Road to South Moat and only a short stretch of snow in the col between South and Middle Moat. No tendency for postholing as the remaining snow was solid with a softening surface layer.
Lots of reroutes on the trail to South Moat that is intended to by-pass the eroded original trail.
Great views from all summits and many places along the ridge. Saw and heard a dust devil today near the summit of Middle Moat.
Lots of hikers and runners out today. The hikers included a couple from Gray ME, two women from Madison NH, a man from Israel, a woman from Center Conway NH, and met five other Northeastern Univ students/alumni at the summit of North Moat.
