Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Our goal was to reroute a short section of Cardigan’s Back 80 by the 93Z junction, moving it to drier ground, and to direct streams so that the ground would remain dry. It’s hard to tell yet how well we succeeded because some of the new treadway remains extremely mushy. On the far (from Cardigan Lodge) side of the junction, we straightened a dogleg meander to flow back into the main stream. That part of the formerly muddy trail is already pretty solid. Outbound from that we took out four small trees to create a straight path. Three more meandering streams were channeled and step stones placed to make crossing the streams easier. Some of that needs to be revisited to properly set the rocks for stability once the ground hardens. One the near side of the junction we removed one blowdown that blocked drainage and set three more step stones. We channeled two streams and cleared a side ditch. Unfortunately, we neglected to bring paint for blazing and found none in the tool shed. The rerouted trail in “blazed” with green surveryor’s tape. That's the missing 20% of trail definition. All in all, about 75 yards of trail were improved.

Lost and Found: One pair sunglasses from a hiker who passed us -- turned on to lodge staff.

Back 80, outbound of cellar hole

This was part of the AMC-NH Chapter Spring School, Intro to Trailwork. There are things we know we did not complete, the blazing, properly setting step stones. We anxiously await draining of the remaining mushy spots. A busy beaver has taken up residence at the pond in front of Cardigan Lodge. In two nights it gnawed the double trunk tree by the bench. The trunk has been removed.
