Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We stayed to the left along the herd path until the final big crossing. No way to cross without getting wet. River was raging with white water rapids in places. We searched for an hour for somewhere to cross. Ended up putting trash bags on our legs, then spikes, and walked across. Water was above the knees, almost thigh deep. We did get wet, but made it across safely. The smaller crossings were all rock hoppable. Would not attempt the big crossing without poles and spikes helped with traction.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: So many blowdowns on the left side/herd path. We lost the path many times.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:

Bugs: None yet, but it was a breezy day.

Comments
Comments: If you don’t want to get wet, I would wait for the river to calm down. Heavy rain and snow melt made the river high on Thursday as noted above. We started on dry ground. After about a mile, it became muddy with water running down the trail. We put on spikes around mile 2. Inconsistent snow for a while and then total snow cover. Slippery packed snow. Do not attempt without spikes. The final half mile to the summit, the snow is still deep. Postholed a few times past the knees. The snow pack is breaking down. With the time-consuming water crossing, and road walk, we decided not to go to South Twin. We walked a section of the North Twin Spur and immediately began postholing. Recommend snowshoes along this ridge heading to South Twin. On our descent, we put on our crampons for better traction in the deep snow on the steep section. Luckily, the beautiful, sunny day made this adventure worth it.
