Comments
Comments: Temperatures in the 60s-70s and a bluebird sky made for a fabulous day. Trail started out dry with a few areas of mud. No snow or ice up to Bald Peak. Highly recommend this .2 spur. Great views. Once we left the old logging road and headed up thru the dense woods, we encountered wet sections between the rocks and small patched of ice/frozen snow. At about mile 3.5, more significant sections of frozen snow slowed the pace. Microspikes went on and were beneficial to navigate the ice slabs and frozen snow. No issues with postholing. On Kinsman Ridge the snow patch was a mix of ice, frozen snow and exposed rock. The cone of North and South Kinsman is mostly snow free. The section over to South the snow pack was a lot softer with more sun exposure. The monorail was still supportive for the most part. However, with the warming temperatures this week, the snow pack will soften. At 2:30 in the afternoon, on our trip back to North the snow was mash potato-like. Moving time was 51/2 hours at a 30 min pace, total time 7 1/2 hours. Make time to sit and enjoy the views.
