Ammonusuc, Crawford Path, Gulfside, Jewell
We donned traction at about 4,000 ft on Ammonusuc and left them on until Lakes in the Clouds. One person in our group wore trail crampons, everyone else wore spikes. We put traction back on at around the same elevation on Jewell, removed at around 3,000 ft.
At this time if you do this loop, you will get your feet and legs wet. The Ammonusuc has plenty of failing bridges, some can be deceiving. Lots of deep slush. We opted to cross back to the Base Station lot from the Jewell trail. We all got wet up to thighs, once the first hiker got across we were able to help each other. Since the river was rushing and deep, you probably don't want to fall here.
The auto road and cog rail are open to the summit, but the cafe is not open yet. Surprisingly less crowded than anticipated at the summit. There are some nasty porta johns open at the summit if you must. |
